FAQ’s:
Have you seen or heard about the latest Social Security email scam:
Fake emails are pretending to come from the US Social Security Administration trying to get people to install ScreenConnect, a remote access tool.
ScreenConnect is a legitimate application when used for remote support and remote access by business to enable IT support and troubleshooting. It allows technicians to remotely access a user’s computer to perform tasks and resolve issues. Unfortunately, it is being abused by cybercriminals.
If a user installs this tool through the scam email it is allowing cybercriminals full access to their system. The hackers can then get sensitive information such as banking details, personal Identification numbers and confidential files. This data can then be used to commit identity fraud, financial fraud, and other harmful acts.
Here is an example of a fraudulent email making the rounds, many of which include official pictures/logos from the Social Security Administration:
“Your Social Security Statement is now available
Thank you for choosing to receive your statements electronically.
Your document is now ready for download:
- Please download the attachment and follow the provided instructions.
- NOTE: Statements & Documents are only compatible with PC/Windows systems.”
What you can do?
When receiving unsolicited emails there are a few necessary precautions you can take to avoid falling for phishing:
- Verify the source of the email through independent sources.
- Do not click on links until you are sure they are non-malicious.
- Do not open downloaded files or attachments until you are sure they are safe.
- Use an up-to-date and active anti-malware solution.
- If you suspect an email is not legitimate, take a name or some text from the message and put it into a search engine to see if any known phishing attacks exist using the same methods.
- Hover over the “From” address with your mouse, often scammers use obviously fake addresses.
