FAQ’s:
Wildfires seem to be a more common occurrence now; how can we prepare for them?
- Excellent and timely question- wildfires, especially on the West Coast, are happening more. There are many organizations in Washington State that are working to help minimize damage from these events AND that want to help people be prepared.
- Here are some resources: Our own KP Fire Dept has an easily downloadable packet to help homeowners prepare and protect their properties, find it on their website at: https://www.keypeninsulafire.org/_files/ugd/b3a5b1_ca0a6cd160184f1880269fabcfb0dac2.pdf
- The KP Emergency Preparedness Group meets monthly at the KP Civic Center. This month, they are discussing options for non-cellular communication methods. As they pointed out in a recent FB post, “In the Lahaina and LA fires, cell service didn’t work.” Having other communication options available during an emergency or natural disaster can help save lives. They meet at 7:00 pm on every 4thThursday of the month.
- Smoke is also an issue. The Tacoma Pierce County Health Dept has information about how to deal with that at: https://tpchd.org/environment/outdoor-air/wildfire-smoke/
- Another consideration for property owners is to get a Wildfire Prepared Certificate to help with insurance rates. Even if you are not interested in the certificate, the site is full of useful information about protecting property. https://wildfireprepared.org/
