FAQ’s:

What are some historical facts about Halloween?

Halloween is celebrated every October 31 and traces its origins to the ancient Celtic festival Samhain, later blended with Christian traditions such as All Hallows’ Eve. It features customs like trick‑or‑treating, jack‑o’-lanterns carved from pumpkins {originally turnips (YES, Turnips)}, costumes, and folklore involving witches, spirits, and black cats.

Origins and History

  • Halloween occurs on October 31 and marks the start of Allhallowtide, a Christian period for remembering the dead.
  • Its roots lie in the Gaelic festival Samhain, when Celts believed the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin.
  • The term “Halloween” is a shortened form of All Hallows’ Eve and first appeared in Christian writings around 1745.
  • Irish and Scottish immigrants brought many Halloween traditions to the United States in the 19th century.
