FAQ’s:
What is the significance of May Day?
For a long time in Europe, May 1 was basically a big “hooray, we survived winter!” party. People went outside, celebrated blooming flowers, and enjoyed not freezing anymore. Think dancing, games, and general good vibes.
But in the last 100+ years, May Day picked up a more serious side. It’s also known as International Workers’ Day, a time to stand up for fair pay, better working conditions, and basic rights.
The fun version goes back to ancient times. The Romans threw a multi-day spring party called Floralia with games and performances, while in places like Ireland and Scotland, people celebrated Beltane with bonfires and flowers to welcome summer.
Over time, all these traditions blended into the classic May Day, complete with dancing around a maypole (which, fun fact, used to be an entire tree that was dragged into town).
So today, May Day is a bit of a split personality: part flower-crown festival, part workers’ rights rally—and in some places, it’s both at once.
