FAQ’s
It will be hot again later this week – why do we hear so much about being careful swimming when the weather turns warm?
- Water looks so calm and welcoming – especially when the air temperature around us gets warm/hot. But this is when cold water can be deadly.
- Cold Water Shock is when the body is unprepared for the shock of the cold water (60 degrees and below). It is a physical reaction and can happen to anyone, even great swimmers.
- Most of the water in our area – the lakes, rivers and Puget Sound, are well below 60 degrees in early summer and stay cold through the season.
- “Cold Shock” can cause dramatic changes in breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. The sudden gasp and rapid breathing alone can create a greater risk of drowning.
How can we prevent issues from the cold shock?
- The above websites offer many suggestions, but the #1 suggestion is to WEAR A LIFEJACKET or other personal floatation device.
